LONDON, March 16 (Reuters) - Former winner Tony Jacklin is coming out of retirement to play in this year's British Open, according to the major championship's official Web site (www.opengolf.com).

The 62-year-old Jacklin last played in the tournament when it was held at St Andrews in 2005, missing the halfway cut with rounds of 79 and 76.

One of his country's finest post-War golfers, the Englishman followed up his victory in the 1969 British Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes by winning the 1970 U.S. Open at Hazeltine by a seven-shot margin.

Jacklin played in seven consecutive Ryder Cup matches from 1967 to 1979, and captained the side four times from 1983 to 1989, twice leading Europe to victory.

Tiger Woods will defend the Claret Jug when the British Open returns to the Scottish course of Carnoustie from July 19-22.
