Polish policemen hurt in Kosovo riots

WARSAW (Reuters) - Twenty two Polish policemen were hurt during Serb riots in the northern Kosovo town of Mitrovica on Monday but their lives were not in danger, a police spokesman said on Monday.

Some 50 Polish policemen, part of a U.N. police force in Kosovo, came under attack outside a court building in Mitrovica.

"Fifteen of them are already at the French field hospital. Another seven are on their way after leaving the dangerous area," a spokesman for Polish police said in a television interview.

He said grenades and home-made explosives were thrown at the police when Serbs opposed to Kosovo's independence were being evicted from the building they occupied last week.

U.N. police were ordered to pull out of the flashpoint town of Mitrovica because of ongoing Serb riots.
