Tram 28 travels time through the heart of Lisbon

LISBON (Reuters Life!) - Under the shadow of the towering statue of poet Luis de Camoes, Tram 28 comes slowly to a halt and opens its doors to the eager passengers waiting to begin a tour into the heart of Lisbon.

Tram 28 has become a national treasure, not only for its particularly beautiful and historical route, but also for the entertainment it provides to locals and tourists alike.

It rattles past a unique selection of old Lisbon's sights, taking travelers through winding streets, past historic buildings and traditional housing.

For 1.30 euros ($1.79), it will take you on a 45-minute ride from the striking Basilica da Estrela to the famous St George's Castle overlooking the Tagus River.

Lisbon residents are especially attracted to the tram in June, when Fado singers accompany visitors along the route.

Tram 28 was chosen specifically for its route through the older and more traditional Lisbon areas where Fado houses are almost as common as pastry shops.

"The price you pay for the trip is low considering the wealth of the experience," said Susana Fonseca, a spokeswoman for Lisbon's tram museum.

The yellow trams were imported from the United States in 1901 to replace horse-drawn carriages as the prime mode of public transportation in Lisbon.
