ADVISORY-Global video appeal story withdrawn
The story headlined "Global football appeal to find Maddy" is wrong and is withdrawn. The story said hundreds of millions of football fans worldwide were expected to watch a video appeal to find missing British child Madeleine McCann at Saturday's FA Cup final. The video was played on large screens at the stadium but BBC Sports and other broadcasters say they had not planned to transmit the appeal to viewers. The video was seen in the stadium, but not on television screens.
A corrected version follows.
LONDON (Reuters) - Football fans at the FA Cup final watched an appeal on Saturday to find missing Madeleine McCann who was abducted more than two weeks ago while on holiday in Portugal.
A two-minute video of four-year-old Madeleine, set to the soundtrack of the Simple Minds hit "Don't You Forget About Me" was shown on big screens at the English FA Cup Final between Manchester United and Chelsea.
It was earlier screened at the UEFA Cup final between Sevilla and Espanyol in Glasgow on Wednesday.
"We've been in close communication with the (McCann) family and those from the government working with them both here and in Portugal," a Football Association spokesman said.
"Because of the huge attention on the FA Cup Final -- not only in this country, but world-wide -- we felt it was something we could do to help to raise awareness and help in the search for Maddy."
The BBC, which televised the match in Britain, did not broadcast the video before or during the match, but showed a few images from it at the close of its post-match analysis show. Continued...
