Kazakh corruption fighter arrested on bribe charges
ALMATY (Reuters) - Police in the Central Asian republic of Kazakhstan have arrested the editor of a newspaper called "Anti-corruption newsletter" on charges of bribing one of its officers, a police spokesman said on Wednesday.
Financial crime police accuse the editor, Tokbergen Abiyev, of paying $2,000 (1,017 pounds) to obtain compromising information about judges, the spokesman said.
He could not say whether Abiyev, detained on May 17, denied the allegations. The editor's representatives could not be reached for comment.
Corruption is an endemic problem in Kazakhstan, an oil-rich ex-Soviet state, but high-profile public cases are rare.
