LONDON (Reuters) - Abba-themed musical "Mamma Mia!" held onto number one spot at the box office, keeping the robot love story "WALL-E" in second, according to Screen International on Tuesday.

The musical, featuring the likes of Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Julie Walters belting out all the old anthems, took just over 4.5 million pounds in its second week of release, with its overall takings reaching almost 17 million pounds.

That was enough to keep it ahead of the animated space adventure WALL-E which took 4.3 million pounds in its opening three days.

Will Smith's portrayal of a conflicted hero in need of an image makeover, "Hancock," dropped a place to third while "Kung Fu Panda," featuring the voice of Jack Black, was down one in fourth.

"Journey to the Center of the Earth", a loose adaptation of the Jules Verne classic, climbed two to fifth with comedy "Meet Dave", debuting in sixth.

"The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian," with its tale of the four Pevensie children returning to C.S. Lewis' magical world, was down in seventh ahead of "Wanted," with James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie.

Climbing back into the top 10 in ninth spot was "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" with martial arts fantasy "Forbidden Kingdom" tenth.
