Soccer-Injured Shevchenko to miss Ukraine qualifier in Faroes
KIEV, March 23 (Reuters) - Ukraine captain Andriy Shevchenko will miss their Euro 2008 qualifier against the Faroe Islands on Saturday after picking up an injury in training.
The Chelsea striker was left at home on Friday when the Ukrainians flew to the small islands in the Atlantic Ocean.
"Shevchenko is not travelling to the Faroe Islands," Ukraine assistant coach Andriy Bal told local television.
"He picked up a slight injury in training and we decided to leave him in Kiev so he could recover in time for (Wednesday's home) match against Lithuania."
Bal did not specify the nature of Shevchenko's injury.
Dynamo Kiev midfielders Serhiy Rebrov and Ruslan Rotan will also miss the Group B match in Toftir with injuries.
The game had been in doubt for several days because of the pitch's poor quality due to snow, but UEFA said on Thursday it would go ahead as scheduled.
