(Reuters) - Factbox on Roberto Donadoni, who lost his job as Italy coach on Thursday after the world champions were beaten on penalties by Spain in the Euro 2008 quarter-finals.

Born: September 9 1963, Bergamo in Italy.

* Wins 63 caps for Italy as a midfielder between 1986 and 1996, scoring five goals.

* Part of the Italy squad in the 1990 World Cup they hosted, missing a penalty in the semi-final defeat by Argentina. Four years later plays in the Azzurri team which loses in the final to Brazil on penalties.

* Helps AC Milan win five Serie A titles and three European Cups and also plays for Atalanta, New York/New Jersey Metrostars and Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia.

* Begins coaching career in 2001 with Serie C (third division) side Lecco. Takes over at Livorno the following season then moves to Genoa for a brief spell before rejoining Livorno, who finish a creditable ninth in Serie A in 2005.

* Leaves Livorno after falling out with the owner and is appointed Italy coach in July 2006 after Marcello Lippi steps down following their World Cup triumph in Germany.

* Put under pressure after Italy stutter in early qualifying but they improve and reach Euro 2008 with relative ease. However, a poor tournament culminates in a quarter-final defeat by Spain on penalties and the Italian Soccer Federation chose not to extend his contract.
