FACTBOX - How to stay safe online
LONDON (Reuters) - One in 10 Internet users was a victim of online fraud last year, according to a survey released on Monday.
The government-backed campaign group Get Safe Online issued the following tips on its Web site (www.getsafeonline.org) to protect people from fraud:
* Keep your passwords secret. Use different ones for each site. Choose passwords that mix letters, symbols and numbers.
* Buy anti-virus software and keep it updated.
* Use a firewall to create a buffer between your computer and the Internet. It helps guard against hackers and viruses.
* Don't open attachments in emails from people you don't know -- they could contain viruses.
* Don't click on anything in a spam email and don't reply to them. Be wary of online hoaxes.
* Upgrade your computer's operating system. Newer versions are generally safer.
* Be careful about which sites you visit and the programs you download. Continued...
