(Reuters) - Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto spoke of the dangers she faced just before her assassination on Thursday.

Here are some notable quotes from Bhutto:

* At a rally in Rawalpindi on Thursday, she said: "I put my life in danger and came here because I feel this country is in danger. People are worried. We will bring the country out of this crisis.".

* Recalling a visit to her father, former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, before his execution in Rawalpindi, 1979: "I told him on my oath in his death cell, I would carry on his work."

* In a 1986 television interview: "Every dictator uses religion as a prop to keep himself in power."

* From "Daughter of Destiny", autobiography of Bhutto: "You can't be fuelled by bitterness. It can eat you up, but it cannot drive you."

* Commenting in 2001 when her 1999 conviction on corruption charges was suspended and a new trial ordered: "I always said that I was innocent and a victim of a politically motivated trial."

* Last October, shortly after escaping a suicide attack on her return to Pakistan after eight years in exile: "We have to modify our campaign to some extent because of the suicide bombings. We will continue to meet the public. We will not be deterred."

* On the declaration of a state of emergency in Pakistan: "I believe General Musharraf and people who are under him want to use this emergency to delay elections and they want to delay elections for at least one to two years."
