*RWE plans to focus on Spain, France, Britain, Poland, Romania, Czech Republic, Turkey for renewable projects

*RWE does not plan to take stake in windturbine maker

ESSEN, Germany, May 2 (Reuters) - German utility RWE (RWEG.DE), Europe's largest emitter of carbon dioxide, does not plan large takeovers of renewable-energy producers as it seeks to catch up with competitors to cut emissions of the greenhouse gas, a leading manager said in an interview.

RWE seeks to acquire projects and develop its own generating capacity, using energy sources such as wind or biomass in countries where it is already a major player, said Fritz Vahrenholt, chief executive of RWE's renewable-energy unit.

"Billion-euro takeovers are not our strategy," Vahrenholt said.

"We don't plan to go the simple way but the more effective way," he said.  Continued...
