ASHGABAT, Aug 4 (Reuters) - Turkmenistan has discovered a large new gas condensate field in the Karakum desert, state-run Turkmen Khabarlary news agency said on Monday.

The field, South Gutlyayak, has produced about 200,000 cubic metres a day of gas and condensate, the agency said. It did not say what the field's reserves were.

"Experts say the successful start of exploration means South Gutlyayak is a rather large gas condensate field," Turkmen Khabarlary said.

Turkmenistan, Central Asia's largest gas producer, sells most of its gas to Russia's Gazprom (GAZP.MM) and is keen to diversify export routes.

Some analysts have expressed doubts about its potential to fill several pipelines.

Britain's Gaffney, Cline & Associates Ltd is due to carry out an independent audit of Turkmenistan's reserves. The results of the previous audit, carried out under former leader Saparmurat Niyazov, have never been revealed. (Reporting by Marat Gurt; writing by Olzhas Auyezov, editing by Anthony Barker)
