UPDATE 1-Yushchenko: Russia statements humiliate Ukraine

KIEV, Jan 9 (Reuters) - Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko said on Friday Russian accusations that Ukraine stole gas meant for Europe were untrue and were intended to humiliate his country.

Russia switched off gas supplies to Ukraine on New Year's Day. Europe also has suffered serious supply disruption for several days after the two ex-Soviet states failed to agree on gas prices for this year.

Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek, whose country holds the revolving European Union presidency, arrived in Kiev to finalise a deal on EU monitors to oversee renewed supplies to Europe.

"Those statements that have in recent days been heard from the mouth of the Russian leadership -- they are incorrect, they humiliate Ukraine," Yushchenko said at a news briefing held with Topolanek.

Yushchenko said such statements did not help foster friendly relations.

"For me, as the president of Ukraine, accusations that Ukraine steals gas are unacceptable. Ukraine does not steal gas.

"If the Russian side have another opinion -- they can file a case to the court and through the court establish the truth."

At a later meeting with Ukraine's Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, Topolanek characterised the row between Moscow and Kiev as a breakdown of confidence.  Continued...
