July 12 (Reuters) - The British Open, the world's oldest major championship, returns to the Ailsa Course at Turnberry, Scotland next week for the fourth time.

Here are brief details of previous Opens held on the par-70 links layout:

1977 - Tom Watson won the second of his five British Open crowns after a memorable duel with fellow American Jack Nicklaus over the last two rounds. Watson triumphed by a stroke after firing successive 65s over the weekend while Nicklaus had to settle for second place after closing with a 65 and a 66.

1986 - Australian Greg Norman clinched his first major title by five shots over Britain's Gordon Brand, having scorched Turnberry with a tournament record-tying 63 in the second round. Norman led all four majors that year going into the final round but emerged victorious only at Turnberry.

1994 - Zimbabwe's Nick Price, a British Open runner-up in 1982 and 1988, finally got both hands on the prized Claret Jug with a one-shot victory over Swede Jesper Parnevik. Price covered the back nine in 31, effectively sealing the win by sinking a monster eagle putt from 50 feet at the 17th.
