Tennis-Tamarine suffers surprise Edgbaston defeat
LONDON, June 10 (Reuters) - Last year's Wimbledon quarter-finalist Tamarine Tanasugarn was upset at the Edgbaston grasscourt tournament on Wednesday, losing 7-6 2-6 6-4 to lowly-ranked Briton Naomi Cavaday.
Tamarine, the 12th seed and ranked more than 250 places higher than her opponent, appeared to have recovered from a poor start in cold, damp conditions in Birmingham when she won the second set but was broken in the seventh game of the decider.
British number one and 11th seed Anne Keothavong lost 6-1 7-6 to India's Sania Mirza and there was also a surprise defeat for Russia's Ekaterina Makarova, the sixth seed losing in three sets to Swiss Stefanie Voegele.
Rain badly disrupted the event and frustrated former Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova's bid to reach the third round. The Russian led Alexa Glatch 6-3 5-4 when the weather ended play for the day.
