SANTIAGO, Nov 11 (Reuters) - Coach Jose Basualdo has left Universidad de Chile after four months having failed to reach the Clausura championship's eight-team knockout phase for the first time, club administrators said.

Basualdo, 46, who played for Argentina at the 1990 and 1994 World Cups, took his decision after "The U" also failed to qualify for the Copa Sudamericana semi-finals last week. He had been appointed in July.

Apertura title-holders Universidad de Chile, one of the country's leading clubs, had gone eight league matches without a win and never before failed to reach the last eight since the knockout system was introduced in 2002.
