UPDATE 1-REpower to supply Vattenfall UK wind farm
(Recast with details, previous Mumbai)
LONDON, July 15 (Reuters) - Germany's REpower Systems AG (RPWGn.DE) has won an order to supply turbines for a UK offshore wind farm to be built by Sweden's Vattenfall AB [VATN.UL], REpower said on Wednesday.
REpower said in a statement it would supply 30 units of its 5 megawatt turbine for the Ormonde wind farm, about 35 kilometres away from Barrow-in-Furness in the Irish Sea. The construction of the farm would is expected to begin in early 2011.
India's wind turbine maker Suzlon Energy Ltd (SUZL.BO) owns 76 percent in REpower, one of the world's very few offshore wind turbine makers with track records, including Siemens AG (SIEGn.DE) and Vestas Wind Systems (VWS.CO).
"We have faced a number of issues including the weakening of sterling and increased costs," David Hodkinson, Head of UK Development for Vattenfall Wind Power, said in a statement.
"Helped by the UK government's...support offered to offshore wind farms facing such pressures, our project team has now been able to make this key investment decision for the project." (Reporting by Nao Nakanishi, Ami Shah in Mumbai, Editing by Michael Kahn)
