Golf-Open-Dane Hansen lets it slip over closing holes
TURNBERRY, Scotland, July 16 (Reuters) - Soren Hansen was in downbeat mood after dropping three shots at the tail end of his two-under 68 in the British Open first round on Thursday.
A poor approach at the par-four 16th resulted in a trip to the burn, costing the Dane a double-bogey six.
Then a frustrating bogey five on the last after finding the fairway with his tee-shot left Hansen pondering what might have been.
"I definitely left something out there," he told Reuters. "I hit two poor shots and got the harshest punishment.
"I think overall two-under in a major is not a bad start but I have certainly left a few shots out there," added the European Ryder Cup player after finishing four behind leader Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain.
In-form Hansen, who has three top-10 finishes in his previous four starts, reached the turn in three-under 32 thanks to three birdies.
Further birdies at the par-four 10th and 13th briefly left him in a tie for the lead with American Tom Watson at five-under.
