JERUSALEM, Dec 18 (Reuters) - Dozens of Israeli policemen hurt each other on Thursday during a gloves-off training exercise to hone riot control skills, a police spokesman said.

Spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld said 54 were treated for superficial injuries, mostly bruising, sustained in pushing and shoving incidents, as they practiced dispersing riots.

No one was hospitalised, he added, denying media reports that some suffered broken bones.

Thousands of police from all over Israel were involved in the drill at a southern army base, which Rosenfeld described as "a huge police training exercise to prepare for riot control and to deal with different scenarios".

A further five policemen were injured in a traffic accident while en route to the drill, when a police van veered off a road, Rosenfeld said.
