JERUSALEM, Dec 18 (Reuters) - Dozens of Israeli policemen were hurt on Thursday during mock riots where some played militant Jewish settlers, others stone-throwing Palestinians, and the rest had to bring the mobs under control.

Although the "rioters" threw tennis balls rather than stones, 54 were treated for superficial injuries, mostly bruising caused by pushing and shoving, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.

No one received hospital treatment, he added, denying media reports that some suffered broken bones.

Thousands of police from all over Israel took part in the drill at a southern army base, which Rosenfeld described as "a huge police training exercise to prepare for riot control and to deal with different scenarios".

A further five policemen were injured in an accident en route to the exercise when a police van veered off a road, Rosenfeld said.
