RIO DE JANEIRO, July 1 (Reuters) - Oil workers at Brazil's state oil company Petrobras started a 24-hour warning strike on Tuesday that is not designed to affect output but to make the company discuss safety and profit-sharing with workers.

Jose Genivaldo Silva, a director with the United Oil Workers' Federation (FUP), told Reuters the unions were hoping to start talks with Petrobras (PETR4.SA)(PBR.N) this week.

"Depending on the company's proposal we could next call a 5-day strike with controlled production, which means that at some platforms output could be decreased, and maybe later an indefinite strike with stoppages," Silva said.

Tuesday's strike is not expected to affect output because skeleton crews will continue to operate.

A 5-day nationwide strike of Petrobras workers in 2001 seriously reduced output and forced Brazil to import additional oil. But unions and the company have managed to resolve their differences over the past few years without production-affecting stoppages.

A year ago, FUP, Brazil's main oil workers' union, called off a 5-day stoppage plan after accepting a sweetened company proposal on job promotions.

Petrobras said in a statement on Tuesday the union labor protest was a hasty measure and called for talks to look for a solution.

"Dialogue is fundamental at this moment to make the negotiations continue," it said.  Continued...
