U.S. stock market report [.N] 0819 ET 02Jan2009-Piper Jaffray lowers view on solar power companies ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Piper Jaffray Friday lowered its view on the solar power sector, saying it had "zero visibility" in most markets and that the first quarter would be a trough for industry shipment.
"The U.S. market remains nascent as utilities are unlikely to move the needle in 2009," the firm wrote, though it added that since the industry was "very much a credit call," end markets could rebound in May or June if the situation doesn't worsen. It sees "modest sequential growth" for the second quarter.
As part of its call, Piper Jaffray downgraded Canadian Solar (CSIQ.O) to sell and ReneSola (SOL.N) to neutral.
