Republican McCain reportedly raises $22 million in May

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Reuters) - Republican U.S. presidential candidate John McCain raised $22 million (11 million pounds) in May, beating his April amount after a month focused on raising cash, a campaign source said.

McCain, an Arizona senator who has wrapped up his party's nomination to run in November's election, raised $18.5 million and had $21.8 million in the bank at the end of April, according to figures filed with the Federal Election Commission.

The source did not say how much cash McCain had at the end of May.

McCain has spent a large chunk of his time raising money in between campaign stops while Democrats Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton -- who have both outraised McCain -- duelled over their party's presidential nomination.

Fund-raising figures for May are not due to the FEC until later this month for all of the candidates.

Obama, who clinched his party's nomination on Tuesday, raised $30.7 million in April, FEC filings show. He had $46.6 million in the bank at the end of that month, with debts of $2 million.
