Shares of steel companies rallied on Friday, with AK Steel (AKS.N) topping
the percentage gainers for the Dow Jones U.S. Steel index .DJUSST a day after
it added surcharges to some of its products amid signs that steel prices in
general were rising.
Industry reports indicate that steel prices are beginning to rise again, after plummeting last year as demand dried up in the economic downturn.
Earlier this week, AK Steel announced it will increase spot market prices for its carbon steel products by $20 per ton for carbon steel product orders scheduled for delivery after July.
On Thursday, the company said a $70 per-ton surcharge will be added to invoices for electrical steel products shipped in July.

Shares of AK Steel rose 7 percent to $17.65 while the steel index gained 2.7 percent to 223.34. Among other components of the sector, U.S. Steel (X.N) added 2.6 percent to $36.51, Nucor (NUE.N) was up 2.5 percent to $47.45 and Reliance Steel (RS.N) added 3.8 percent to $40.35.

Shares of Jackson Hewitt Tax Service (JTX.N) soared on Friday, a day after it named Harry Buckley, the former head of H&R Block (HRB.N), as its chief executive officer.
Sentiment on the tax preparer was also improved after it hired Goldman Sachs to examine strategic alternatives.

Shares of Xtent XTNT.O rallied on Friday, a day after it said it received conditional approval from U.S. health regulators to begin a clinical program for its Custom NX drug eluting stent system.
The conditional approval for the program, comprising two pivotal trials, requires Xtent to address some technical issues about which the Food and Drug Administration has questions prior to granting full approval, Xtent said.

Shares of Kenexa Corp (KNXA.O) advanced on Friday, after Cowen & Co
upgraded the recruitment software company to outperform, arguing that market
expectations for the company were overly conservative.
"We assert that if the economy stabilizes, companies will outsource an increasing amount of human resource functions," the firm wrote to clients.
