MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Lowell has formed off Mexico's Pacific coast and could hit the Baja California peninsular popular with U.S. tourists next weekend, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said on Sunday.

Lowell has maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (72 kph). The Baja California peninsular is home to Los Cabos, a beach and cruise ship destination but much of the area is desert and not home to oil installations.

Tropical Storm Julio drenched Baja California in late August but did not cause major damage.
