UPDATE 1-Shougang Peru workers say to start strike Monday

LIMA, July 8 (Reuters) - Workers at Shougang Hierro Peru (SHP.LM) plan to strike on Monday for higher wages, a union leader said on Wednesday.
"We presented our plan to strike to the ministry (of mining and energy) on Monday the 6th, and we are planning a general, indefinite strike starting July 13th," union leader Meliton Huacasi Condori told Reuters.
Shougang Hierro Peru, a union of the Chinese Shougang Group, churned out some 5.2 million tonnes of iron ore last year and is Peru's only iron producer.
Peru's largest mining federation called off a nationwide strike last month after Congress voted on retirement rules and said it would debate a profit-sharing bill.
But tensions in the sector persist.
Prices for most of the country's metals exports have fallen because of the global economic downturn and the federation says nearly 10,000 mine workers have lost their jobs since November.
Peru is the world's top producer of silver, No. 2 in copper and zinc, and ranks sixth in gold. Continued...
