(Adds that Shell says no word until Tuesday on restart, paragraph 3)

HOUSTON, June 8 (Reuters) - Capline, the major crude pipeline from the U.S. Gulf Coast to the Midwest, was shut for repair Monday, Shell (RDSa.L) said.

A valve leak caused a minor spill and forced shutdown for repair Saturday, an official said. The line was restarted but then shut again Monday for additional repair.

A Shell spokeswoman said late Monday there would be no word on restart until Tuesday. An official earlier had said restart was expected late Monday.

Customers were not impacted by the shutdown, Shell said.

Capline runs 632 miles from St. James, Louisiana, to Patoka, Illinois, and supplies numerous Midwest refineries.

The line has a capacity of 1,140,000 barrels per day (bpd), but has been carrying between 700,000 and 800,000 bpd recently because demand is weak in a slow economy, officials said.

Shell operates the pipeline for a group of owners including Marathon (MRO.N) and BP (BP.L). (Reporting by Bruce Nichols)
