NEW YORK, Jan 12 (Reuters) - New York heating oil moved up sharply on the first protracted cold weather snap along the northern Eastern seaboard, traders said on Monday.

According the U.S. government, nationwide demand for heating fuel is expected to be 7.7 percent higher than normal this week. In the Northeast, where heating oil is the favored fuel, demand is expected to reach 13.7 percent above normal. [ID:nN12314387]

In the Gulf Coast, heating oil moved up slightly to Friday's bid level but lack of scheduling on the Colonial Pipeline was seen keeping a lid in differential movement.

Cold weather was seen playing little role in the heating oil futures market which fell almost 2 percent at midday. Focus was on poor demand and the end of the natural gas problem between Russia and the Ukraine, which is expected to get natural gas back to much of Europe. [O/N]

Cycle 4 61-grade ultra low sulfur diesel traded at 1.50 cents under the screen, in line with Friday's level.

Same cycle 74 grade was pegged at 4.00 cents.  Continued...
