UPDATE 1-Marathon: KY refinery cuts rates after pipe leak

NEW YORK, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Marathon Oil Corp (MRO.N) confirmed on Monday that its 222,000 barrel per day refinery in Catlettsburg, Kentucky, was at reduced rates after a crude oil pipeline supplying the refinery ruptured.

"The refinery is still operational, but the crude throughput rate has been reduced," Marathon spokesman Robert Calmus said. "We will, of course, resume normal operations at the refinery as soon as the pipeline is repaired."

There was currently no timetable for the pipeline restart, Calmus said.

The pipeline, which carries crude oil from Patoka, Illinois, to Owensboro, Kentucky, was shut on Sunday morning after the company detected low pressure.

Marathon estimated about 5,000 barrels of crude oil were spilled from the pipeline, which is the only pipeline that delivers crude to the Catlettsburg refinery.

The refinery does have crude stored onsite and can also be supplied by crude oil stored at a tank farm at the end of the pipeline in Owensboro, Kentucky.

The refinery is also accessible for crude oil shipments by barge, by way of the Ohio River, Calmus said.
