UPDATE 1-Shell says Deer Park crude units at planned rates

HOUSTON, May 12 (Reuters) - Shell Oil Co said on Tuesday afternoon the two crude units at its 340,000 barrel per day (bpd) joint-venture refinery in Deer Park, Texas, were at planned production rates following recovery from a Monday morning power and steam outage.

The refinery's coking unit was also at planned rates Tuesday afternoon, said Shell spokeswoman Emily Oberton.

Simultaneously, feed was being introduced into the refinery's gasoline-producing fluidic catalytic cracking unit while the refinery's hydrocracker is in prestartup and the hydrotreater is restarting.

Oberton said the expected date of the refinery's return to normal operations was not immediately available.

In a notice filed Tuesday with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Shell said the restart could last through Friday.

Units were also restarting at the adjoining chemical plant, she said.

"The chemical plant was harder hit," Oberton said.

Power and steam were lost Monday morning with the unexpected outage of the Calpine steam utilities plant, which supplies the Shell complex in the Houston suburb of Deer Park, Texas, the company has said.  Continued...
