Pluspetrol says protest does not hit Camisea gas
LIMA, Aug 12 (Reuters) - Pluspetrol said on Tuesday that output from Peru's Camisea natural gas fields has not been affected by protests that forced it to shut down part of one of its lots.
Armed Peruvian tribes entered the Pagoreni A and B zones of Lot 56, located in Cusco province, on Monday, hoping to pressure the government to reevaluate laws promoting petroleum exploration and investment in the Amazon. Exploration has angered indigenous rights and environmental groups.
Felipe Pacuri, a legal aide for rights group AIDESEP, said the government wants to protest to be called off before it will meet with the tribes about their demands.
"Maybe on Friday the indigenous people will end the protest," he said.
It also said tribes took over an electricity station and closed part of an oil duct in northern Peru.
The Argentine company, the key operator of Peru's developing gas fields, said it has evacuated workers from the site in Cusco province. (Reporting by Jean Luis Arce; Writing by Terry Wade; Editing by Christian Wiessner)
