U.S. stock options volatility dropped on Wednesday as the U.S. equities market extended its bull run after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said inflation pressures were starting to ease.
"Bernanke's comments alleviated some of the concerns that investors had about another hike in interest rates and now are more comfortable that, in the near-term future, there may actually be decreases," said Herb Kurlan, president of Vtrader Pro, an online options, equities and futures firm in San Francisco.

(GRMN.O) after its quarterly earnings more than doubled and the company
forecast a strong 2007.
Garmin shares rose 6 percent to $55.90 in early afternoon trading after posting a new high of $59.30.
"This is a stock that option traders seem to think is going to have not only a great 2007, but also a great few days," said Greg Jensen at online options education firm Spread Trade Systems.

The benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 index .SPX rose within 100 points of its lifetime high on Wednesday, amid a broad stock market rally. The S&P rose as high as 1,455.65 on Wednesday to its highest level since September 2000. The index is now slightly more than 6 percent off its March 2000 lifetime high of 1,552.92.

Shares of mining companies rose on Wednesday as gold jumped 1 percent, notching up a new seven-month high, as the dollar fell further after comments from Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke.
The CBOE Gold index .GOX was up 0.5 percent. Shares of Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold (FCX.N) were up 0.6 percent at $56.53, while shares of Barrick Gold (ABX.N) were up 1.2 percent at $31.39.

U.S. stocks rallied and the Dow industrials hit a record high on Wednesday as investors welcomed Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's assessment that the economy would grow moderately as inflation eases.
The Fed chief's message in semiannual testimony to Congress on the economy raised expectations for a Fed interest-rate cut near the end of the year, sending shares of banks higher.

Oil fell a dollar to around $58 a barrel on Wednesday after a U.S. government report showed a smaller-than-expected drop in inventories of heating oil in the world's top consumer.
U.S. stocks of distillates, which include heating oil, fell by 3 million barrels, less than the expected 4.2 million-barrel drop, the Energy Information Administration said.
The energy sector was the second-worst performer in the S&P 500 index on Wednesday, behind consumer staples. Amid a broader stock market rally, the S&P energy sector .GSPE was up just 0.22 percent.

Merrill Lynch's MLQS ADR Composite, which tracks overseas shares traded in the U.S. rose 1.5 percentage points in January, beating the performance of the benchmark S&P 500, which was up 1.4 percent in January.
Industrial ADRs and gains in ADRs from the Philippines led gains. The weakest performing ADRs were Indonesian ADRs and Energy ADRs, Merrill analyst Savita Subramanian said in a note to clients on Wednesday.
