NEW YORK, Sept 14 (Reuters) - Citgo Petroleum said on Sunday it requested 1 million barrels of crude oil from the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve for its 430,000 barrel per day oil refinery in Lake Charles, Louisiana, due to supply disruptions caused by hurricanes Gustav and Ike.

"Crude delivery options have been severely curtailed post hurricanes Gustav and Ike, including the closures of the Sabine Pass and Calcasieu Ship Channel waterways," Citgo said in a press release. "Citgo's request for SPR crude is an effort to alleviate potential fuel shortages in the United States."

The Department of Energy has already granted a handful of requests for SPR crude oil from refiners in the wake of hurricanes Gustav and Ike, but Citgo's would be the largest.
