UPDATE 1-Workers cancel strike at Freeport's Cerro Verde
(Adds meeting with company)
LIMA, July 15 (Reuters) - Workers at Freeport-McMoRan's (FCX.N) Cerro Verde copper pit in Peru have called off plans for a strike that was slated to start on Wednesday, a union leader said on Tuesday.
"The measure to strike has been suspended," Leoncio Amudio told Reuters.
He said union officials would talk about their demands with company officials on Wednesday, adding that the climate between the two sides is positive.
Two weeks ago, workers at Cerro Verde, Peru's third-largest copper mine, decided not to join a nationwide mining strike that ended nearly a week later. At the time, the union had said it might hold a separate strike to push for better benefits.
Dozens of strikes have been held this year in Peru, one of the world's leading metals exporters, as workers and the poor demand a bigger share of a six-year economic boom. (Reporting by Maria Luisa Palomino; writing by Terry Wade; editing by Carol Bishopric)
