NEW YORK, July 21 (Reuters) - Global news and data provider Thomson Reuters Corp (TRI.TO) (TRIL.L) said on Monday it had named Reuters veteran James Powell as its chief technology officer.

Powell replaces Michael Wilens, who is leaving to head asset management at Fidelity Investments, the world's biggest mutual funds company.

At Thomson Reuters, Wilens served as executive vice president for strategy, technology and innovation.

Powell, who will take the job on Aug. 1, will advise senior management and the board on new technology, according to a company memo.

He also will be in charge of promoting best practices at Thomson Reuters in areas including search, data mining, databasing, digital platforms and datacenter design.

Powell, who is CTO of the Thomson Reuters Markets Division, has served in several positions at Reuters, including CTO for enterprise and global head of product development.

He also worked at Solace Systems, Citadel Investment Group and TIBCO Finance Technology.

Thomson Reuters was formed when Canada's Thomson Corp bought Reuters last April for more than $16 billion. (Reporting by Robert MacMillan; Editing by Ted Kerr)
