May 20 (Reuters) - Government stress tests earlier this month found that 10 major U.S. banks
had capital shortfalls, of which nine have announced plans to raise capital. GMAC is the lone
holdout.
Below are the 19 banks that the government stress tested, the size of their capital shortfall
if any, and equity they have issued. Some banks plan to also raise capital by selling assets and
converting preferred shares into common stock.
Some banks raised capital even though the government did not find a shortfall. Those banks are
looking to position themselves to repay taxpayer money taken from the $700 billion Troubled Asset
Relief Program.
Corporate bond issuance does not count as equity capital, but issuing non-guaranteed debt
maturing in at least five years is a requirement for banks wishing to repay TARP money.
