1623 ET 22May2009 Investors eye SPDR Gold Trust ETF calls
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shares of the world's largest bullion-backed exchange-traded fund, the SPDR
Gold Trust (GLD.P) or GLD, rose 30 cents to $94.15. One trade of interest was
the work of an investor who is likely long shares of GLD, said Andrew
Wilkinson, market analyst at Interactive Brokers Group in a note. The trader
sold 5,000 calls at the July $100 strike price for a $2.15 premium and also
sold 10,000 calls at the higher July $107 strike for $1 each. Perhaps the
transactions represent covered calls, he said. If so, the investor enjoys the
premiums granted for writing the options and establishes effective exit
positions. "About one-third of his shares will be called away from him at
expiration if the July $100 calls land in-the-money by expiration with the
remaining shares called from him in the event that the July $107 calls land
in-the-money," he said. GLD would need to rally by as much as 14 percent for
the July $107 calls to expire in-the-money.
1605 ET 22May2009 LDK Solar option sentiment mixed after qtrly net loss
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shares of Chinese solar wafer maker LDK Solar Co Ltd (LDK.N) dropped 16.45
percent to $7.77 after the company reported a wider-than-expected quarterly net
loss as the global credit crisis dried up funding for renewable energy
projects.
In the options market, volume was double the combined daily turnover as
11,000 puts and 6,719 calls traded, according to Trade Alert. The June $10
calls are the most active, with 2,665 contracts traded. "It looks like some
premium buyers are taking advantage of today's weakness to take positions in
the contract, which is 27.9 percent out-of-the-money with four weeks left until
expiration," said WhatsTrading.com. He also said the equity's implied option
volatility is down to 104 percent, from about 125 percent yesterday.

0819 ET 22May2009-GFT sees higher open for the markets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
GFT forecast a higher open for U.S. markets on Friday, saying that after
two days of losses, the indexes were steadying.
"We have a long weekend in the US as well as here, and while volumes could
be light, we can expect some volatility as traders square up positions," it
wrote. "Few will want to carry anything significant as markets gear up for a
potential big move."
The firm expects the Dow Jones industrial average .DJI to open up 62
points while the S&P 500 .SPX opens up 7 points.
