NEW YORK, Oct 23 (Reuters) - Aflac Inc (AFL.N) and Chubb Corp (CB.N) both reported steep declines in earnings, the latest insurers to be battered by investment writedowns and losses from hurricanes.

The shares of insurers in general have been hammered in recent weeks and even the decision by several -- including Chubb, one of the largest U.S. business insurers -- to pre-announce earnings, has not done much to arrest the trend.

The 24-company KBW Insurance index .KIX is down 84 percent so far this year.  Continued...
