TABLE -US ethanol capacity nears 7.9 bln gallons/yr
NEW YORK, Jan 24 (Reuters) - U.S. ethanol capacity has jumped 45 percent over last year to nearly 7.9 billion gallons per year (gpy) as producers hope to break open new markets for the domestic fuel amid government mandates and strong oil prices.
U.S. ethanol plants keep opening despite terminal and offloading bottlenecks that have led to pooling of the fuel in production hubs, analysts say.
ConAgra Foods Inc said this week that high construction and water costs forced it to withdraw plans to build a more than 100 million gpy ethanol plant in Clovis, New Mexico. (Please see [nN23625245]).
Late last year, at least four other companies delayed or halted building distilleries.
Even so, capacity is rising. Ethanol producers see hope in new markets developing in the U.S. Southeast, and the new U.S. energy law that mandates a five-fold increase in blending to 36 billion gpy by 2022.
Midwest cash ethanol prices <ETHANOL/US> were $2.21 per gallon on Thursday, down about 8 cents in the week, but up about 68 cents from lows in October.
There are 139 U.S. ethanol distilleries with 62 plants under construction and 7 undergoing expansion.
If all the new plants and expansions come on line in 2008, or later, total U.S. capacity will be about 13.5 billion gpy.
Below is a list of the larger U.S. ethanol production and expansion plans by company. All figures are in million gpy. Company Location Feedstock Capacity Under Construction Abengoa Bioenergy Corp.
