DENVER (Reuters) - Following are notable quotes from the third day of the U.S. Democratic Party convention which formally nominated Sen. Barack Obama as the party's candidate for the November 4 presidential election.

"My fellow Democrats, I say to you: Barack Obama is ready to lead America and to restore American leadership in the world ... Barack Obama is ready to be president of the United States." - Former President Bill Clinton

"This has been a joy. We didn't make it, but boy did we have a good time trying." - Hillary Clinton, describing her failed battle for the nomination at a meeting with Democratic delegates.

"It's more he'll win if it's meant to be. And I'm also a bit superstitious. I never claim it out loud. We just do the work. I don't want to jinx it. I don't want to get to far ahead of myself." - Michelle Obama asked by NBC whether she was sure of victory or more of a fatalist.

"For the past eight years, the man in the Oval Office has tipped his hat over his eyes, kicked back his chair, and snoozed at his desk." - Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid on President George W. Bush.

"John McCain was wrong, and Barack Obama was right." - Vice presidential nominee Joe Biden after citing McCain's opposition to setting a timetable for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq, which the Bush administration is now close to accepting.

"We need to accept the fact that there are going to be some angry white guys who won't vote for Barack Obama because he's a black man ... The fundamental challenge for us is not the whole issue of what colour his skin is ... it's that our economy has gone into the toilet." - Mike Fikes, 56, construction union leader and delegate from Michigan supporting Obama.
