SAN FRANCISCO, Dec 26 (Reuters) - San Francisco police combed the city's zoo for clues as to how a tiger escaped from its enclosure on Christmas and killed one man and wounded two others, a zoo spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

Spokeswoman Lora LaMarca added that zoo officials could not comment on how the Siberian tiger managed to get out of its habitat -- a grotto surrounded by a moat and high wall -- and attack the three visitors at around closing time on Tuesday.

"It is an ongoing police investigation and it is still being looked into," LaMarca said.

The two injured men were reported in stable condition at a San Francisco hospital while local media said police were searching the zoo for other potential victims.

A police spokesman was not immediately available for comment on the investigation. Police alerted to Tuesday's attack shot and killed the tiger, 9-year-old Tatiana, which last December attacked and severely injured a zoo worker.
