US Treasury imposes sanctions on Myanmar officials
WASHINGTON, Sept 27 (Reuters) - The U.S. Treasury Department said on Thursday it imposed sanctions on 14 senior Myanmar government officials in the wake of Yangon's military crackdown on political demonstrations.
The Treasury's action, which follows an executive order by President George W. Bush authorizing new sanctions against the Myanmar government, prohibits U.S. financial transactions with the 14 officials and seeks to freeze any assets they may have under U.S. jurisdiction.
"The president has made it clear that we will not stand by as the regime tries to silence the voices of the Burmese people through repression and intimidation," said Adam Szubin, director of the Treasury's sanctions arm, the Office of ForeignAssets Control.
