Duval and Wie set to steal limelight in Reno
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Former world number one David Duval and American teenager Michelle Wie will hog much of the limelight at this week's Reno-Tahoe Open in Reno, Nevada.
Most of golf's biggest names are competing in the third and final World Golf Championship event of the year, the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.
Former British Open champion Duval, a 13-times winner on the PGA Tour, still attracts strong fan support despite not having won anywhere in the world since the 2001 Dunlop Phoenix in Japan.
He gave a glimpse of his best form at this month's British Open, producing three good rounds out of four in strong gusting winds at Royal Birkdale en route to a tie for 39th place.
Wie, once one of the most trumpeted players in the game, has decided to make her eighth appearance on the men's PGA Tour where she is yet to make the cut.
The 18-year-old Hawaiian, who was disqualified in her last LPGA Tour event after forgetting to sign her scorecard, has accepted a sponsor's exemption to compete at Montreux Golf & Country Club.
However, her decision to play with the men in the same week that the Women's British Open is being held at Sunningdale has left many of her peers shaking their heads in disbelief.
"We all have different agendas in life but I really don't know why Michelle continues to do this," Sweden's Annika Sorenstam, a 10-times major winner, told reporters at Sunningdale.
