NEW YORK (Reuters) - Jo-Wilfried Tsonga's entertaining U.S. Open run ended at the third-round stage on Sunday as the Frenchman was beaten 7-6 6-2 6-3 by Spanish 15th seed Tommy Robredo.

The Australian Open runner-up, in his first event since he had right knee surgery in May, entertained the crowd with some stunning shot-making but eventually succumbed after two hours 18 minutes.

Tsonga, seeded 19, had come from a set down to win his first two matches and when he recovered from a break down to level at 5-5 it looked like he might be able to move on.

But Robredo, who beat former champion Marat Safin in the previous round, snatched the first set on the tiebreak and as Tsonga faded, he eased through to the last 16 at Flushing Meadows for the fifth time.

Robredo will now play either third seed Novak Djokovic or Croatian 30th seed Marin Cilic.
