SHANGHAI, July 23 (Reuters) - China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has ordered all of its coal mines to halt production for a safety overhaul after a flooding accident that killed at least seven, the official Xinhua news agency reported on Wednesday.

Guangxi is a minor coal producer and obtains most of the coal it uses from other provinces and abroad. In 2007, the region produced 7 million tonnes of coal, or about 0.3 percent of the nation's total, figures from the National Bureau of Statistics show.

The regional government asked the mines to check for potential flooding dangers in and around the mines and take immediate measures to address them, the report said.

Flooding at a coal mine in Tiandong county on Monday had killed seven miners and trapped 29 as of Tuesday night.

The tragedy is the latest of a string of deadly coal mine accidents since Beijing, eager to boost coal output to cope with a power shortage, called on local governments to speed up approvals for the resumption of output at small mines.

A coal shortage is pushing China into its worst power crisis since 2004, when rolling blackouts hit much of the country. (Reporting by Rujun Shen; Editing by Edmund Klamann)
