Golf-Argentina's Romero take charge at U.S. Senior Open
DENVER, Aug 2 (Reuters) - Argentina's Eduardo Romero tapped in a three-foot biride putt at the last for a five-under-par 65 to take a two-stroke lead in the U.S. Senior Open third round in Colorado Springs on Saturday.
The 54-year-old from Cordoba set the tone for a memorable day with birdies on the first three holes before posting a nine-under total of 201.
Overnight leader Fred Funk carded a 69 to slip back into second place at seven under, one ahead of fellow American John Cook (66).
Romero was delighted with his performance at The Broadmoor Resort after piling up seven birdies and two bogeys.
"I played great today," he told reporters. "I think it was the best round so far all year, because I played very solid, very concentrated.
"Just one more round to go. If I win tomorrow, it's a dream for me. But also, to win the tournament tomorrow is very important for Latin America and Argentina."
The straight-hitting Funk was two ahead at the start of the day but slipped back with three bogeys after the turn.
"I'm not sitting where I want but I played great on the front nine," said the 52-year-old, a three-times winner on the Champions Tour. "I shot a really good, solid four under on the front and got what I deserved on the back.
"I'm determined to go out there and have a good time. I'm playing good and I'm playing good enough to have fun. The golf course is playing hard. It's one of those where you can get yourself in some situations." Continued...
