PORT OF SPAIN, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Forty-year-old midfielder Russell Latapy and forward Dwight Yorke, four years his junior, scored to give Trinidad & Tobago a 2-1 win over a weakened United States team in their 2010 World Cup qualifier on Wednesday.

Former Manchester United striker Yorke scored the winner with a 79th minute penalty to virtually assure the Soca Warriors a place in the final round of the marathon CONCACAF zone qualifying competition next year.

The U.S., already sure of their place, rested eight first-team regulars and lost their 100 percent record.

Latapy, who plays for Scottish Premier League Falkirk, put Trinidad ahead in the 62nd minute with a volley which hit the post and bounced off U.S. goalkeeper Brad Guzan and into the net.

Charlie Davies equalised for the visitors from Jozy Altidore's pass before Altidore turned villain four minutes later when he pulled Makan Hislop's shirt in the area and Yorke converted the penalty.

Trinidad, under former Colombia coach Francisco Maturana, jumped to second in the group with eight points from five games, three ahead of Guatemala who lost 2-1 to Cuba, and need a draw at home to the Cubans in their last match to go through.
