Golf-Van Pelt wins Milwaukee playoff for first PGA Tour victory
CHICAGO, July 19 (Reuters) - Bo Van Pelt won his first PGA Tour title when he birdied the second hole of a sudden death playoff to beat fellow American John Mallinger in the Milwaukee Championship at Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Sunday.
Van Pelt eased home a three-foot putt after missing a 26-footer to claim his first tour victory in 229 tournaments.
"I guess there comes a point in time where you draw a line in the sand and say, 'Enough is enough,' " the 34-year-old told reporters.
He and Mallinger both birdied the first playoff hole after finishing regulation at 13-under 267 over the Brown Deer Park Golf Course.
"I played as well as I could," Mallinger said. "Bo hit two great shots in the playoff. Hats off to him."
Van Pelt started the day tied for ninth but his six-under 64, including a birdie on the final hole, left him in a tie for first with Mallinger, who had a final round 65.
American Jerry Kelly shot a five-under 65 to finish in third at 268, 12-under.
Fellow countryman Dicky Pride (65), Jeff Quinney (67) and Jeff Klauk (67) shared fourth at 269.
Overnight leader Frank Lickliter II stumbled to a three-over 73 and fell to a tie for 18th at 272. Continued...
