* Oct power output down yr/yr for 15th month in row

* Weak industrial demand blamed for decline (Adds details)

TOKYO, Nov 11 (Reuters) - Japan's 10 utilities consumed less thermal coal, fuel oil, crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) in October than a year earlier as weak industrial demand limited electricity consumption, industry data showed on Wednesday.

The utilities burned 0.43 million kilolitres of fuel oil last month compared with 0.78 million kl a year earlier, the Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan said.

They generated 73.72 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in October, down 4.9 percent from a year earlier, the data showed. That was roughly in line with expectations in a Reuters survey. [ID:nT114489]

It marked the 15th month in a row of declines, adding to the longest losing streak on record, although it was nearly half the 9 percent fall seen in September.

Higher nuclear plant utilisation and soft power demand were likely to have helped put downward pressure on the burning of fossil fuels.

The nuclear power plant utilisation rate at Japan's 10 nuclear power companies rose to an average 63.5 percent in October, up from 56.9 percent a year earlier, the trade ministry said last week. [ID:nT126024] (Reporting by James Topham and Miho Yoshikawa)
