UPDATE 1-Taiwan refiners to raise fuel prices over 3 pct

TAIPEI, Nov 1 (Reuters) - Taiwan's two refiners, CPC Corp, Taiwan [CHIP.UL] and Formosa Petrochemical Corp (6505.TW), said on Thursday they would lift domestic fuel prices by more than 3 percent, resisting pressure to moderate hikes.

State-run CPC and publicly traded Formosa will lift prices of unleaded gasoline and premium diesel by T$0.9 ($0.03) per litre from Friday, the companies said in statements on their Web sites.

Those increases amounted to a 3.1 percent rise for Octane 92 unleaded gasoline and a 3.4 percent hike for premium diesel from last month.

Crude oil prices jumped more than 1 percent on Thursday to more than $96 a barrel for the first time, extending the previous day's 5 percent surge after a surprise fall in U.S. crude stocks and data showing strong economic growth.

"As oil prices remain high, we must request that consumers use oil products sparingly," CPC said in its statement.

Lawmakers have been pressuring the cabinet to rein in price hikes by either limiting increases or freezing prices amid concerns about a spike in inflation.

Taiwan's September consumer price index (CPI) rose 3.08 percent from a year earlier, the highest rate in two years.  Continued...
